Frequently asked questions

Q: In which order should I read the Revelation Space books?

A: You should read Revelation Space, Redemption Ark and Absolution Gap in that order - although I've met people who read and enjoyed them in completely the opposite order. Chasm City, The Prefect, and the collections Galactic North and Diamond Dogs/Turquoise Days can be read in any order, before, after or during the three other books.

Q: Are you going to write any more RS stuff?

A: Yes. I'd quite like to do a sequel or two to The Prefect, and of course there is scope for standalone novels in the universe. This year (2009) I have also written a new RS short story, so there is more to come.

Q: Are you going to do a sequel to PUSHING ICE?

A: Yes, I hope so.

Q: Are you going to do a sequel to CENTURY RAIN?

A: No, much as that book is a favorite of mine.

Q: What about HOUSE OF SUNS?

A: Again, I hope to continue the story at some point.

Q: That stuff about prime numbers in Diamond Dogs - what's that all about?

A: It's about me being thick. Sorry.

Q: And that Dakota business in Century Rain?

A: see above. (Actually, there are many, many errors and cock-ups I could hold my hand up to. Those are merely the two main ones I get called on).

Q: Can I get my copy of such-and-such-a-book signed?

A: Drop me an email and we'll see if it's feasible.

Q: Can I get some signed bookplates?

A: yes: again, drop me an email and I'll do my best to get some bookplates signed. (Bookplates, in case you haven't been acquainted, are small paper sheets that you can drop into a book if it hasn't been signed.)

Q: I've read one of your books and want to read some more science fiction. What can you recommend?

A: there's so much good stuff out there now - good, recent stuff, let alone reprints - that I'm loathe to single out any one author. Best thing to do is grab a copy of one of the many Year's Best SF volumes (doesn't matter if it's not bang up to date) and see what takes your fancy.

Q: Can you read my novel, short story, etc?

A: sorry - like most writers, I don't have enough time to keep up with the stuff I'd choose to read, let alone anything else. And I'm spectacularly bad in this regard.

Q: Is there going to be a film of (insert book title here)

A: The only film offer I've ever had was two-for-one at Blockbuster (joke copyright Jack Dee).
